History:

Can Tho Museum was founded in 1976. After many changes of the name, the museum was officially called in 1992. In order to accelerate the task of collectibles, statistics, revise the documents, artifacts, scientific researches and innovate professional activities to enhance the effectiveness of public service, Can Tho Museum started its new construction and fundamentally changed contents on display in 1998.

After 2 years of constructing and upgrading the system of exhibiting, Can Tho Museum was officially inaugurated and became one of the largest museums in Can Tho city as well as Mekong Delta museums on 31/08/2000. Discovering Can Tho Museum is truly one of the fascinating things to do in Can Tho.

Since inaugurated and put into operation, Can Tho Museum has provided documents to tourists with numerous interesting topics such as overview of natural and social characteristics in Can Tho, presentation on geographical location, soil, climate, flora and fauna, landscape, Oc Eo culture, culture of Viet – Hoa – Khmer culture or introduction on the history of fighting foreign aggression of Can Tho people.  The museum has also introduced the achievements of Economics – Culture – Society of Can Tho since 1975. There have been numerous fascinating thematic exhibits organized so far such as “ancient Can Tho” – the period from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century exhibition. The exhibition includes 65 precious photos and documents 50×70 format largely selected from the postcard collection “Past and Present”” by the Association of Science and History Vietnam along with “Past and Present” Magazine collecting and providing.

In 2013, in response to the 9th anniversary of Vietnam’s cultural heritage Day 23/11, Can Tho Museum in collaboration with Association of Ho Chi Minh City Cultural Heritage organized exhibition of Vietnam Heritage photo contest 2013. The exhibition introduced and shown off the best 100 photos of Vietnam Heritage Photo Contest 2013, honored precious values of natural heritages, tangible cultural heritages and intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. Can Tho Museum also significantly contributes to promote the image of a dynamic Can Tho and Can Tho tourism closer to domestic and foreign tourists.

Taking pioneering role among Can Tho museums, Can Tho Museum has created the trust with the public in the exploitation and promotion of the value of cultural heritages.  The museum now houses and displays more than 1,000 precious artifacts, documents and artifacts. Beside the renewal of professional activities and contents displaying at the museum to serve the public, Can Tho Museum has deliberately focused on traditional education so far.
