Tram Ton Pass: Exploring the Majestic Gateway to the Heavens

Where Is Tram Ton Pass?

Tram Ton Pass is in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near Sapa. It's the longest pass in the Northwest region.

The pass is adjacent to Highway No.4D, which traverses the Hoang Lien Son range and borders the provinces of Lao Cai and Lai Chau.

At an elevation of 200m above sea level, spanning 50 km with treacherous bends and turns, Tram Ton Pass is shrouded in white clouds year-round.

Its formidable characteristics distinguish it from other famous passes in the region, such as Ma Pi Leng (20 km), Pha Din (32 km), and Khau Pha (40 km, rendering them comparatively diminutive.

Best Time To Visit Tram Ton Pass

The best time to visit Tram Ton Pass depends on the season and what you want to experience there.

  • In the summer months, the weather is generally pleasant, with minimal fog. However, I recommend sticking to the section of the pass in Lao Cai, as the Lai Chau section tends to be hot and sunny.

  • During the winter, Lai Chau has more comfortable weather with some sun during the day, but Lao Cai is often foggy and can even have snow. If you go during winter, bring warm clothes and gloves.

  • Spring and autumn also have nice weather and beautiful views, so they're good times to visit.

During the day, the best time to go over the pass is in the late afternoon when the sunset turns the sky red over the mountains. Spending the night nearby lets you see the sunrise over the pass in the morning, which is beautiful.

What To Do When Visiting Tram Ton Pass?

As you approach the pass, you'll notice the cliffs and deep abysses flanking the road on either side. One side plunges into a seemingly bottomless chasm, while the other has jagged, towering rock faces.

Warning signs dot the roadside, serving as a reminder of the dangers inherent in traversing this majestic pass.

  • The best time to conquer the pass

Many adventurers prefer to time their journey so that they reach the pass as the sun begins to set. I love the transition from day to dusk when the fading light paints the cliffs and valleys in warm hues.

At sunrise, the sunlight spills over the rugged peaks and valleys, casting long shadows that dance across the landscape.

For those brave enough to stand at the edge of a sharp curve beside the towering cliffs, there is a sense of awe-inspiring majesty in the air.

In the stillness of early morning, you can almost hear the silent breath of the mountains. Their ancient voices whisper secrets that have been hidden for centuries.

As you continue your journey along the pass, you'll admire the ever-changing vistas of rugged mountains, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls.

Visit O Quy Ho Heaven Gate

Visit O Quy Ho Heaven Gate

O Quy Ho Heaven Gate is at the highest point of the pass and offers stunning views that make you feel like you're walking into the clouds.

Having conquered a record-long pass in the North (about 50km), you’ll be delighted with the breathtaking scenery.

Rising above all the rolling mountains and the sea of clouds below, you feel like you are standing in the middle of where heaven and earth meet. I mean, you’ll feel the essence and greatness of Northwest nature.

Standing here, you can see far and wide, with clouds floating above the mountains and forests below. The gate itself has a wooden railing decorated with beautiful wild orchids.

There were many cafes and small restaurants along the pass where travelers could take a break, sip coffee, and enjoy the view. This spot was perfect for taking pictures, especially with the floating clouds in the background.

Once you arrive here, don't rush to miss the experience of sipping a cup of coffee at O Quy Ho cafe and leisurely enjoying the sweetness and splendor of the scenery here.

In recent years, efforts have been made to protect the environment around the pass and promote sustainable tourism, including managing waste, planting more trees, and involving local communities in tourism activities.

Walk On Glass Bridge

Glass Bridge

Glass Bridge

The Glass Bridge is an attraction at the Rong May ecotourism resort near the Tram Ton Pass. It's made entirely of clear glass, stretching out from the mountain wall.

Imagine walking on a see-through floor 60 meters long and 500 meters above the ground. It's like floating in the air, with nothing but glass below your feet.

This bridge can hold more than 3,000 people at once. As you stroll across it, you'll admire stunning views of the mountains and valleys. It's a mix of excitement and wonder, like walking in the air surrounded by nature.

Besides the Glass Bridge, there's also a sky ladder system outside, reaching 300 meters into the sky. It's another way to get even higher and enjoy more incredible scenery.

The Rong May ecotourism resort is perfect for adventurers. You can also try bungee jumping, zip-lining, or paragliding if you want thrills. These activities let you experience the adrenaline rush while taking in the beauty of the pass.

Did anyone tell you the trip to Silver Waterfall is like stepping into a fairy tale world? It's a place filled with wonder and beauty, with water flowing down from high mountains, creating a stunning sight.

As you travel up the road to the waterfall, you'll see the water cascading down, looking like white mist in the air.

  • The best time to visit Silver Waterfall

The best time to visit Silver Waterfall is during the summer months, from February to June. That's when the waterfall is strongest, and the surrounding forest is lush and green, making the scenery even more beautiful.

In the winter, the waterfall might not have as much water, and it could even be frozen. But seeing the snowflakes falling gently around the icy landscape of Silver Waterfall and Tram Ton Pass is still a magical experience.

  • Getting to Silver Waterfall

Getting to the waterfall has been made with staircases built along the way, making it simpler to reach the top. These stairs also let you rest and take in the scenery as you climb.

Before you reach the waterfall, you'll pass by a salmon breeding and research center. It's the biggest in Vietnam and allows you to learn about raising fish in cold water.

  • Admiring the beauty of Silver Waterfall

Each part of the waterfall is like a different note in a beautiful song, sometimes loud and powerful, other times gentle and soothing. Even from far away, you can hear its sound, urging you to come closer and see its beauty up close.

The atmosphere around Silver Waterfall is peaceful and calming, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Trek To Fansipan

Trek To Fansipan

Trek To Fansipan

Fansipan is the highest mountain in Indochina. So, trekking to it promises an exciting journey full of challenges and rewards.

The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 7 days, depending on how fit you are. Most people in good shape finish it in about 2 to 3 days.

There are three popular routes to trek to Fansipan, each with different levels of difficulty:

  • Tram Ton - Tram Ton: This route is the easiest and most suitable for beginners.

  • Sin Chai - Tram Ton: This route is more challenging, with varied terrain and some steep parts.

  • Cat Cat - Tram Ton: This route is the toughest, with steep climbs and rough terrain.

At the start of the trek, the path through the forest is relatively easy, especially at around 2,000 meters above sea level. However, some steep parts can be slippery, so you need to be careful.

View From Fansipan

View From Fansipan

As you climb higher to 2,800 meters, the trail gets more challenging with steep slopes. But despite the difficulty, the views are stunning, with towering mountains and drifting clouds.

The most exciting part of the trek is the final stretch, about 300 meters from the summit. As you get closer to the top, you'll see the iconic peak of Fansipan standing tall against the sky.

While the trek is challenging, it's also incredibly rewarding. Conquering the wild nature and pushing your limits feels amazing.

  • Note for this trekking adventure:

It's crucial to be well-prepared for the trek. Ensure you have the right gear, like sturdy shoes, warm clothes, and enough water.

I recommend hiring a guide who knows the area well and can keep you safe. Having a friend with you can make the journey more enjoyable and provide extra support.

Explore Love Waterfall

Explore Love Waterfall

Love Waterfall is about 14 km from Sapa and 4 km from Tram Ton Pass. The waterfall originates deep in the forest, and the stream that flows from it is about 1,600m long. You'll walk through the forest, passing by bamboo groves and streams to get there.

  • Best time to explore

In March, the path becomes even more stunning, with red azalea flowers blooming along the way. Whether you visit in the morning or afternoon, remember to check the weather forecast and choose a sunny day for your trek.

  • Exploring the Love Waterfall

The path to the waterfall has stacked stones, and you can walk along the stream to enjoy the scenery and fresh air. It's also a nice place to camp and relax.

The water at Love Waterfall has a golden color, which looks beautiful against the green mountains. During your trek, you might see Hmong children selling their goods or playing in the Golden Stream.

The waterfall is about 100 meters tall, and the water flows gently, creating a romantic atmosphere. Below the waterfall, the Golden Stream winds through the rocks, shimmering in the sunlight.

As you hike to Love Waterfall, you'll hear water and birds chirping and feel the cool breeze rustling through the leaves. It's a serene environment that makes you feel at peace.

When you arrive at Love Waterfall, you'll be amazed by its beauty. The sight of the waterfall cascading down the rocks is truly breathtaking. You can even dip your feet in the cool water and enjoy the scent of azalea flowers.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can try canyoning with the help of professional guides. Just make sure you're in good shape before attempting this activity.

Try Local Specialties

Try Local Specialties

When visiting Tram Ton Pass, you shouldn't miss indulging in the unique local cuisine. Along the journey, you can stop at various eateries to savor many rustic dishes, which are specialties of the Northwest region of Vietnam.

Here are some dishes you should try:

  • Buffalo meat cooked in a traditional way

  • Bamboo-cooked rice

  • Free-range pork

  • Hill chicken

  • Grilled corn

  • Grilled eggs

  • Grilled sweet potatoes

One day, my family and I went to admire the scenery at Tram Ton Pass on a rainy and cold day. The clouds covered everything, visibility was less than 1 km, let alone admiring Tram Ton Pass. There were a few houses selling clothes, dried products, and grilled food at the summit.

Being surrounded by family, gathering around a warm fire, drinking sweet grass tea, chatting, eating grilled corn, skewered meat, or buffalo meat cooked traditionally was wonderful.

Moreover, there are also some unique types of vegetables, such as luffa and mountain cabbage.

When passing through the pass, you can see many local ethnic families growing extensive fields of luffa. These vegetables are grown and nurtured by local ethnic communities without pesticides, ensuring they are fresh, tasty, and clean.

While enjoying the local delicacies, you can also admire the beautiful scenery. You can see the majestic Fansipan Mountain, the picturesque Silver Waterfall, and the terraced fields.

Breathing in the cool mountain air by a warm fire, sipping hot tea, or eating grilled sweet potatoes and corn is delightful.

Additionally, along Tram Ton Pass, there are stalls run by local ethnic people selling various local products for travelers to buy as souvenirs, such as:

  • Scarves

  • Dresses

  • Bracelets

  • Agricultural tools

How Can You Go To Tram Ton Pass?

To get to Tram Ton Pass, you have a few options.

From Sapa

If you're starting from downtown Sapa, it's about a 12-kilometer journey. You'll:

1/ Pass by Silver Waterfall

2/ Go through the gate of Hoang Lien Son Park

3/ Reach the forest ranger checkpoint at Tram Ton

4/ And then continue a few more kilometers until you reach the peak of Tram Ton.

Although it sounds like a long way, it only takes about 15 minutes by car from Sapa. If you take a taxi, it'll cost you around 200,000 VND for the trip.

You'll also pass by some Instagram-worthy locations like Hmong Flower Garden and Coi Xay Homestay. Don't miss the chance to explore these check-in spots.

From Lao Cai

Another way to reach Tram Ton Pass is from Lao Cai. You can take a bus, coach, or rent a motorbike to Sapa town and then follow the same route (as mentioned above).

The distance between Lao Cai and Tram Ton Pass is only about 30 kilometers, but it's a mountainous road with many dangerous curves.

If you plan to ride a motorbike, be extremely careful, especially at the sharp bends and steep slopes. Female riders should let their male companions handle the driving, as the mountainous roads can be challenging.

Consider taking the cable car.

Additionally, there's now a safer and more convenient option to quickly reach the peak of Tram Ton Pass: taking the cable car

You can easily purchase cable car tickets at the cable car station (where you buy tickets to visit the peak of Fansipan).

From Fansipan, you'll move to Silver Waterfall, then to Tram Ton Station, and finally travel about 4-5 km along Highway No.4D to reach the peak of the pass.

Tips For Conquering Tram Ton Pass

Conquering Tram Ton Pass is an exciting adventure, but always stay safe. Here are my tips:

  • Tram Ton Pass is on a national highway, so there's continuous traffic, including large vehicles like trucks, buses, and motorcycles. The road edges are cliffs, so be careful when parking or taking photos.

  • Park your vehicle neatly, stay vigilant, and avoid playing or standing too close to the road, as it can be dangerous.

  • It's best to drive slowly and keep to the left side of the road because tourist cars or buses sometimes take sharp turns.

  • The weather can be cold and windy since the pass is over 2,000 meters above sea level. So, wear warm clothes and bring gloves, a hat, and a scarf.

Conclusion

Tram Ton Pass will bring an experience that stays with you long after you've left. From its breathtaking views to its rich cultural significance, Tram Ton Pass captivates visitors with its beauty and charm.
