• During the winter, Lai Chau has more comfortable weather with some sun during the day, but Lao Cai is often foggy and can even have snow. If you go during winter, bring warm clothes and gloves. 

• Spring and autumn also have nice weather and beautiful views, so they're good times to visit. 

During the day, the best time to go over the pass is in the late afternoon when the sunset turns the sky red over the mountains. Spending the night nearby lets you see the sunrise over the pass in the morning, which is beautiful.

One day, my family and I went to admire the scenery at Tram Ton Pass on a rainy and cold day. The clouds covered everything, visibility was less than 1 km, let alone admiring Tram Ton Pass. There were a few houses selling clothes, dried products, and grilled food at the summit. 

Being surrounded by family, gathering around a warm fire, drinking sweet grass tea, chatting, eating grilled corn, skewered meat, or buffalo meat cooked traditionally was wonderful.

When passing through the pass, you can see many local ethnic families growing extensive fields of luffa. These vegetables are grown and nurtured by local ethnic communities without pesticides, ensuring they are fresh, tasty, and clean.

While enjoying the local delicacies, you can also admire the beautiful scenery. You can see the majestic Fansipan Mountain, the picturesque Silver Waterfall, and the terraced fields. 

Breathing in the cool mountain air by a warm fire, sipping hot tea, or eating grilled sweet potatoes and corn is delightful.

To get to Tram Ton Pass, you have a few options. 

From Sapa

If you're starting from downtown Sapa, it's about a 12-kilometer journey. You'll:

1/ Pass by Silver Waterfall

2/ Go through the gate of Hoang Lien Son Park

3/ Reach the forest ranger checkpoint at Tram Ton

4/ And then continue a few more kilometers until you reach the peak of Tram Ton. 

Although it sounds like a long way, it only takes about 15 minutes by car from Sapa. If you take a taxi, it'll cost you around 200,000 VND for the trip.

You'll also pass by some Instagram-worthy locations like Hmong Flower Garden and Coi Xay Homestay. Don't miss the chance to explore these check-in spots.

From Lao Cai

Another way to reach Tram Ton Pass is from Lao Cai. You can take a bus, coach, or rent a motorbike to Sapa town and then follow the same route (as mentioned above). 

The distance between Lao Cai and Tram Ton Pass is only about 30 kilometers, but it's a mountainous road with many dangerous curves. 

If you plan to ride a motorbike, be extremely careful, especially at the sharp bends and steep slopes. Female riders should let their male companions handle the driving, as the mountainous roads can be challenging.

Consider taking the cable car.

Additionally, there's now a safer and more convenient option to quickly reach the peak of Tram Ton Pass: taking the cable car. 

You can easily purchase cable car tickets at the cable car station (where you buy tickets to visit the peak of Fansipan). 

From Fansipan, you'll move to Silver Waterfall, then to Tram Ton Station, and finally travel about 4-5 km along Highway No.4D to reach the peak of the pass.

• The weather can be cold and windy since the pass is over 2,000 meters above sea level. So, wear warm clothes and bring gloves, a hat, and a scarf.
