Nam Ngum Lake

Nam Ngum Lake is a man made reservoir that was created by the building of the Nam Ngum damn in the 1970s. It is a place of great scenic beauty and has become a haven for many species of bird as well as a popular holiday spot for tourists. The waters are clean and safe making for a superb site, to stop and spend some time. It is situated about 50 miles to the north of the country’s capital, Vientiane. The valley where the damn was constructed is an extremely beautiful place and has only been enhanced by this man made resource. A popular pastime by locals and tourists alike are the boat trips that now ply their trade along this vast and scenically splendid waterway. The lake that provides the water is the Nam Ngum. It runs for over 200 miles before spilling its contents into the Mekong River, at Vientiane. This really is a delightful stopping of location on the way between Vientiane and Vang Vieng. The entire river basin is home to almost a million people. There is much to see and do here.
