In the south of the Central coastal region of Vietnam tours, the coastal province of Khanh Hoa is to be found. The capital city here is Nha Trang. It is also the cultural, economic and politic centre of the whole region. It developed around the River Cai, is surrounded by four mountains and fringed by golden sands and crystal clear blue waters of the South China Sea. It is considered to be Vietnam’s premier beach resort area, and has many attractions, drawing thousands of holiday makers every year.

Nha Trang is the most attractive tourist destination in Asia

This is an extremely picturesque area and the mountains offer plenty of opportunities for escape and exploration. Hon Ba Mountain alone has over 40 species of rare flora and 60 rare species of fauna, making it a naturalist’s paradise. In 1981 a rare wild ginger was found to be growing here. Geostachys annamensis, is a flowering ginger and was found in an area more than 1000 feet above sea level. Weather permitting the mountain views here are extraordinary. Though often low cloud will roll in the limit your view. In the early part of the 20th century, Alexandre Yersin, the famous doctor and bacteriologist built a wooden hut high up the mountain that still stands to this day. He did field work here and went on to discover the bacillus, responsible for the Bubonic Plague.

Why Nha Trang is always in the top of “hot” tourist destinations in the world?

It is however, the bay and the impressive beaches here that have brought the high numbers of tourists. In 2003 the bay was named as one of the top ten finest beaches in the world, in a global study. An award that brought great pride to the City of Nha Trang’s almost 400,000 inhabitants. The city and surrounding area is the centre of scuba diving within Vietnam. The clear waters and myriad of fish and sea creature species attract top divers from all over the world. The beach area has developed from a small cluster of fishing villages to what it is today. The French recognised the immense beauty of the area and began transforming it into a small resort town. During the war the Americans saw the benefits and GIs would use the area as a rest and recuperation centre, away from the horrors of warfare. The beach itself is a magnificent strip of golden sands fringed by turquoise blue water. The 19 islands in the bay, merely provide an interesting and picturesque addition to an already magnificent vista. The islands of course, in turn, add to the quality of diving in the bay.

It is quite simply a stunning setting, from mountains, through the foothills, the city at the base, then the beaches and the fabulous bay, dotted with tiny islands. Parks containing many sculptures run along the promenade giving a very pleasant look to the whole seafront. Of the six main beaches here it is Tran Phu Beach that proves the most popular. It takes its name from Tran Phu Street which runs along the edge. This is a pretty boulevard with antique streets lamps and delightful gardens. Hon Chong and Dai Lanh beach in particular, proves a hit with Vietnamese, who see this whole area as the best in the country for beach holidays. Whilst Dai Lanh Beach is some 50 miles north of the city it is still included in the area.

Whale Island Beach is another favourite. The island consists of one large island surrounded by smaller ones, about 30 miles north of Nha Trang. This is a smaller and more exclusive beach resort, run by the French. It takes its name from the whales that visit in April every year, to swim in the crescent shaped lagoon, hunting for krill.

One of the main attractions here is the Vin Pearl Resort. The Resort is on the island of Hon Tre. The island is linked to the mainland by the Vin Pearl Cable Car. This 3600 yard ride is supported by seven pillars standing in the ocean. The tallest one is some 375 feet tall, though more than 120 feet are beneath the waves. It is the world’s longest cable car ride over water. It carries passengers to the island resort which is a huge resort five star complex, including a water park and spa. Formerly known as the Vietnamese Pearl Resort its name changed in 2007 when the owning company merged with the giant Vincom company.

The resort has 485 rooms, including a Presidential Suite and a Royal Suite. There is a 750 yard long beach and private swimming pool, the largest in Southeast Asia. A superb 200,000 square feet shopping Mall designed in the style of Hoi An’s old town, provides a great shopping experience for travellers. There is a food complex, known as the Food Village and a giant aquarium, the largest in Vietnam, which includes the now obligatory water tunnel, complete with moving floor. This is home to more than 300 species of fish, including the sharks, which are a big crowd puller.

The whole area of Nha Trang Bay is a big draw for holiday makers coming to Vietnam in search of sun, sand and sea. It is not difficult to see why. It is stunningly beautiful and offers as diverse a range of holiday as any beach area in the world. Backpackers head into town and the hostels, whilst those with a few more notes in their wallets, will soon settle in to one of the fabulous resorts. Five star villas on the hills overlooking bay, offer sumptuous accommodation with incredible views. Tourists can rest and relax on the beaches or enjoy a myriad of water sports. Beach football, volleyball, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, the list really does go on and on.
