A brief history of Bago City (Pegu)

A-brief-history-of-Bago-City-Pegu

Bago City (Pegu) was founded in 573 AD by two Monks at Thaton. The two of them saw a bird hamsa roof (legendary bird) standing on a male hamsa on an island in the middle of a large lake. Seeing this as a good omen, they formed the royal city by the lake, called Hanthawady (meaning the kingdom of the hamsa). During the later periods of the Mon Men (1287 – 1539), Hanthawady became the center of the Mon kingdom in southern Myanmar.

The Bamar ruled in 1539 when King Tabinshwehti merged Bago into his Taungoo kingdom. The city is often referred to by former European visitors – who still know Bago as Pegu – as an important seaport.

In 1740, the Mon people, after a long time in Taungoo, reestablished Bago as their capital. But in 1757, Alaungpaya destroyed the city. King Bodawpaya, who ruled from 1782 to 1819, rebuilt the city. But due to the change of river, the city is separated from the sea. So Bago never returned to his glory days.

Shwethalyaung Buddha

Once upon a time, there was a very vicious king named Mgadeikpa. He ruled the land around Bago. His kingdom is full of turmoil and violence. One day, the king’s son went into the forest and hunted him to a small village. There, he met a Monster girl who made his heart flutter. Although she is a Buddhist, he is like everyone else in the realm of pagan worship, who still love each other and marry after he promises that she can continue to follow Buddhism.

After returning to the palace, the king became enraged when he discovered this and demanded the execution of both men. However, when the bride prayed before the statue of Pagan, the statue cracked and crumbled. The king becomes extremely scared and realizes his sin. He requested the construction of a statue of Buddha and the entire people moved to the Buddha.
