My Son Sanctuary & Hoi An: Echoes of Ancient Champa

One of the most mesmerizing sights in the Hoi An region is My Son, a place of paramount historical significance as the spiritual heart of the ancient Champa kingdom. Between the 4th and 13th centuries, a distinct culture, deeply rooted in Indian Hinduism, flourished along the coastal regions of present-day Vietnam.

This unique culture is vividly represented by a collection of awe-inspiring tower-temples nestled in a dramatic site that once served as the religious and political epicenter of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence. Located within a breathtaking valley, surrounded by towering mountain ranges, My Son was designated as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site in 1999.

Originally crafted from wood, these temples succumbed to fire in the 6th century, only to be painstakingly restored in the 7th century under the guidance of Sambhuvarman, who reconstructed them using locally crafted bricks. By the 13th century, over 70 similar temples had been constructed, solidifying My Son as a sacred sanctuary of Hinduism within the Champa Kingdom.
