Overnight Train from Hanoi

20.30pm – AsiaTourAdvisor’s tour guide come to pick you up from your hotel then transfer to Ha Noi Railway Station and catch the night train to Lao Cai (overnight on the train, the cabin with 4 berths sharing cabin, soft sleeper and air-conditioning). Arrive Lao Cai 5:30 or 6:00am.

Sapa is the focal point for mountain travel in Vietnam, and is a riot of colour and atmosphere as people from the myriad ethnic minorities of the hills gather in the markets.

The 'Flower Hmong' wear rainbow-coloured smocks, while the Red Dao's traditional costume is a more muted indigo but topped off with a bright red headdress. When all of the mountain people congregate, the result is a feast for the eyes and the senses.

*** It takes about 9 hours to go from Hanoi to Sapa by night train.

Bac Ha Market

The train arrives at around 6:20 am. Look for the “AsiaTourAdvisor’s Logo & Your Name” sign when you exit the train station, as our guide will pick you up there and transfer from Lao Cai to Bac Ha market to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the Bac Ha Sunday Markets - the largest in the region. Observe the mix of Flower H’mong, Phu La, Black Dao, Tay and Nung ethnic minority traders that journey to the market from the surrounding mountainous areas. Browse the colourful stalls stocking a variety of local products, brightly coloured handicrafts and fresh tea. You will join local ethnic peoples of the morning to enjoy the exciting atmosphere as well as activities of this market. Have lunch at local restaurant.

After lunch, driver to visit Hoang A Tuong’s palace, otherwise known as the outlandish Vua Meo. Constructed by the French in 1921 in an unusual ‘oriental baroque’ style, it resembles a hybrid between an exotic church and a French chateau, and was used to entertain the Flower H’mong chief Hoang A Tuong. Continue to visit Ban Pho Village before saying goodbye Bac Ha to Sapa. Arrive in Sapa, check in hotel and free time for relaxing or visiting local market.

Approx: 7 km of trekking with about 5 hours, Over 170 km of driving from Lao Cai to Bac Ha market  and  travel to Sapa

Visit Lao Chai & Ta Van villages - Night train to Hanoi

Following a hotel breakfast, meet your guide in the morning and depart on a second trek from the town of Sapa to Golden Stream valley. Today’s trekking offers more stunning views of rice terraces and gardens as well as Mt Fansipan, whose summit rises 10,312 feet (3,143 meters) above sea level.
After crossing a suspension bridge, marvel at the breathtaking scenery as you continue through the Golden Stream valley, stopping at Lao Chai village for lunch.

After your meal, follow your guide on a walk through this village where Black Hmong people reside, and continue on to Ta Van village, home to the Dzay tribe. This part of the hike is relatively easy, though the trail can be quite slippery if it rains, so good footwear is recommended. You’ll visit with some local families and learn about their daily lifestyle and fascinating culture, before departing to the main road to meet up with your driver and return to Sapa.

A shower is available at our office in Sapa, followed by an afternoon free to explore the town on your own. In late afternoon The car will pick you up for the night train back to Hanoi. Arrive at Lao Cai train station and take the night train back to Hanoi.

Approx: 10 km of trekking with about 6 hours, Over 30 km of driving from Sapa to Lao Cai station with about over 1 hour.

Good bye & see you in the next time! AsiaTourAdvisor can arrange additional customized trips for you if the above itinerary does not match your expectations.

A trip into the mountains to the bustling local market of Bac Ha. Many ethnic minorities converge here to buy and sell their goods in a real local experience. It’s the best place to experience the unique ethnic vibe of the region.

Sapa in the mountainous region in the North West of Vietnam is finally getting the recognition it deserves. It is the trekking center of Vietnam and in addition is famous for its ethnic minority markets. These markets have been a way of life for the ethnic minority people who run them for centuries. Young couples meet here, horses are traded, food is eaten and the wonderful embroidered fabric for which tribes like the Flower H’Mong, Black H’Mong and Giay are renown, are traded and sold. You will mix and associate with people whose lives haven’t changed for generations.

Excellent Tour Guide
Reviewed On: Sep 28, 2023HemalIndia

My sister and I had booked the Bac Ha market trek tour with AsiaTourAdvisor Company to get a local guide to show us the market as well as inform us of local history and customs. Our guide, showed us courtesy and was especially mindful that we take care with traffic or navigating through the crowds. She was highly informative with also being fun and lively to joke and talk with. She added extra special customer service by accommodating our individual need to be dropped off at the Lao Cai train station. And she gave us her own personal insight into the traditions and cultural history of her own tribe in addition to the other tribes of the region. Excellent experience and we felt even more rewarded that we were contributing to a local company using local members of the community. Big thumbs up!

We have booked tour “Sapa Bac Ha Market in 2 Days 3 Nights” with AsiaTourAdvisor. We can't say enough good things about our 2 days of sapa trekking with Pang. Her quick wit and great English speaking skills made our trekking in Sapa a blast. We spent the first day trekking around Sapa and despite the pouring rain (& our lack of appropriate attire) Pang kept our spirits high and helped outfit us with the necessary rain gear. She also helped customize our trekking by suggesting a longer/less touristy trek (which is what we were looking for) to her home village. It was fun getting off the typical tourist route and checking out where Pang is from. Day 1 journey to Bac Ha Market was great and Pang was as informative as ever! We were satisfied with services in AsiaTourAdvisor. Best regards,

With all the excellent ratings and positive reviews on Tripadvisor, we have no doubt booking with Mr Hong from AsiaTourAdvisor company a 3 day tour Sapa and Bac Ha Market. Mr Hong and the tour guide was helpful and comforted us because the traveling by train in Vietnam may be a little bit rough. However they organized the tour that we picked up the night train so everything was peaceful and quiet. We just slept so tight. On the next day morning, we picked up at train at Lao Cai station and transfer to Sapa. The train was crowded with people but we had a private cabin and Mr.Dong the tour guide alongside so we felt comfortable watching the lovely mountains and village houses in the highlands. When we got to Sapa, Bac Ha market was the place we were impressed the most, maybe that’s why they used it to name the tour. Local people trading with each other, it could be money or anything they had to trade with the others. We just walked pass them and seeing those beautiful handicrafts and goods. There were some carpet sellers asking us to buy their carpets but the tour guide helped us to get rid of them as we said to him we didn’t want that. There’s one great story that you don’t have to worry about eating in this place, grilled meat, rice in the bamboos, etc. they are so awesome, delicious and extremely cheap! I can’t make sure of that because I had no stomachache or similar problems after eating those. Lovely tour guide, lots of sweet memories, good food, fresh and cold weather, friendly local people. We just can’t get enough of this tour! Will be back here next year!

Market Sapa tour

I went on two treks with AsiaTourAdvisor.com and one market tour. One trek was with my son last year, and on the other trek our whole family came. Pang our guide was fantastic. The countryside is stunning – straight out Tolkien – the pace was leisurely and each trip was a treat. Pang’s English was perfect, and her knowledge extensive. AsiaTourAdvisor.com has the best trained guides! They really put in the effort to ensure that everything goes smoothly. So if you are in Sapa – a trek with AsiaTourAdvisor is not to be missed. On another trip I went on a visit to Bac Ha market with Dong. I came in on the train on the previous day and Dong picked me up in Lao Cai which shortened the trip to Bac Ha. Bac Ha market is so colorful. Yes there is a tourist aspect to the market but it is also a strongly local market selling everything from scythes to buffalo. Dong also was an excellent guide. Warm and funny and gently guided us without bossing us around. We saw everything from the buffalo market to the Paris end of the market where Hmong women were shopping for the perfect pattern. The tourists were just as entertaining as the locals. It was hot though and I regretted not having taken my hat with me and my sunburn cream. Then we visited a Flower Hmong village – and tasted rice wine straight from a still. If I had one word for my experience of the day it would be ‘gracious’. We felt in safe hospitable hands with them, Pang & Dong and AsiaTourAdvisor, too.

The fascinating Markets of Sapa
Reviewed On: Mar 29, 2023SandraAustralia

I recent got to combine two of my favourite activities, trekking and visiting markets; how could I possibly refuse? Sapa in North Western Vietnam is fast becoming recognised as one of the best centres for trekking holidays in the whole of Southeast Asia. I was really looking forward to Sapa, and I have to say it exceeded all expectations. I booked market tour with Asia Tour Advisor and they were great from start to finish. I conversed through email with the tour company and they recommended the tour. I was collected from my hotel in Hanoi and caught the overnight train to Sapa. Everything went smoothly as I was met at the station and taken to my hotel. After breakfast we set out to go to the first market, the scenery is astonishingly beautiful as we wound through the hillsides. The market was simply lovely, the ethnic hill people who run it are fascinating. They trade everything from food to clothes to buffalo. After the market we went to see the people in their villages. It really was just what I had hope for. A great trip that has left me with lasting memories and some wonderful photographs.

An Amazing Experience, I’ll never forget it

Visiting the ethnic people in Sapa was like taking part in a National Geographic film. That these amazing people have managed to hang on to their identity is terrific, that I was lucky enough to witness it, more so. I even enjoyed the market and I am not a market person, at all. The trekking was not to strenuous, the food was great, as was the hotel. This was a wonderful experience for start to end. The guides are excellent as well, they truly are proud of their country. I would recommend this type of tour to anyone.

“What is so beautiful about Bac Ha Market?” – that’s my first thought before the trip “Sapa Bac Ha Market”. After 3 nights and 2 days of amazingly wonderful tour where we got to the inner heart of this hill, met Black Hmong tribe and enjoyed tasty meals, I understand why this place is famous. The experience could not be this memorable without the helpful tour guides from AsiaTourAdvisor.com. They made everything easy for us to join in. The stay, the activities, the gifts – all are awesome. I’m surely be back with you guys in the future.

She was very helpful and excellent guide, answering our never-ending questions about the Hmong and culture in Sapa. We really enjoyed the food, and she helped take our vegetable desire into account when constructing meals. Amazing experience, and would definitely recommend to others who have an open mind and able to try something new.

This was an amazing experience with AsiaTourAdvisor. We took the full day walking tour with a private guide and it was a journey to say the least! MAKE SURE to pay for waterproof shoe rental as the trail is very muddy and your shoes will certainly get destroyed.

Our tour guide was amazing and she was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. The sights on the trek were breathtaking and we can’t recommend this tour enough!

We had great 3 days: sunday in bac ha market and 2 days trekking and homestay in sapa area. All suggested and organized by Thu Vu. Everything worked as planned -all the transports. Our guide May Sung from black Hmong was great, energetic and cheerful. She picked excellent routes with fewer tourists and great rice terrace views. She has very good English and explained a lot of the area village life. Really a unique experience
