To really enjoy a trip in this water region, all visitors need to do is just sitting on a boat, and letting it drive to every rivers in Mekong Delta, to every mysterious mangroves, to every lovely villages lying near the river,… here.
Starting from Phnom Penh, Mekong River divides into two tributaries flowing from north to south: the right tributary is Bassac River (called Hau River when approaching to Vietnam) and the left one is Mekong River (called Tien River when approaching to Vietnam), both supply the silt for the vast delta in the Southern Vietnam, Cuu Long River Delta or Mekong Delta.

Tien river and Hau river flow through the provinces such as: Dong Thap, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, An Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu. Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre and most of Dong Thap are on the left bank of Tien River; Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, a large part of Dong Thap and An Giang are located between Tien river and Hau river. The right bank of Hau River is in the region of Long Xuyen Quadrangle and Ca Mau Peninsula.

Mekong River brings many benefits for cultivation and aquaculture, especially during the flood season. The supply of water for irrigation, silt for rice fields, along with the abundant fish and shrimp from the river, has made local residents more likely to live with the flood than building dykes like in the Red River Delta. But the river also causes many disadvantages, typically flooding frequently in the rainy season, or salinity intrusion in the dry season.
Along with the endless benefits that Southern local people receive thanks to Mekong River, there’s also a cultural trait of this water region that can’t be mistaken with any other places in Vietnam, that’s the Mekong Delta floating market.
Cai Rang floating market, a simple of Mekong Delta
There are a big amount of floating markets you can find in Mekong Delta, but the most famous one is still Cai Rang floating market in Can Tho province. In order to see all the fancy activities in a floating market here, you must wake up early, because the market here is held very soon in the morning, and remember not to have breakfast before coming here, because there are a lot of boats that can give you very delicious dishes, fresh fruits or even coffee,… and all you need to do to order these is searching around to find what you want to buy, waving them and there you’ll have what you need. Very simple, right!
