Discovering the specialty cakes of Vietnam

To a country that has a great culinary culture like Vietnam, every single types of traditional cakes will always possesses​ its own story. So how about making a memorable Vietnam tour through a journey of finding the stories of specialty cakes of each regions?

Sounds interesting and a bit hungry, right? So no more hesitation, let’s follow me and listen how the cakes tell their stories!

1. Green rice flake cakes

You can find the best green rice flake cakes on Hang Than Street in Hanoi, because this is the most well-known place for this kind of cake.

It is a delicious rice cake that is always use as offerings during wedding ceremonies and ancestor-worshipping days, and it’s also one specialty that most visitor’s to Hanoi love to buy for their friends and relatives as a present. To make the stuffing, submerge green beans in water and flay them before steaming. The green bean paste is blended with a dash of sugar, grapefruit flower attar, sugar coated lotus seeds and coconut. The stuffing is divided into small rolls that are covered by fried green rice flakes. This cake is always served cold, and is often served with tea. It is one of the more popular cakes found in Vietnam. It’s green in color and very sweet. It has a gelatinous texture, and is very tasty.

2. Hot cake

Hot cake is made in Nguyen village, Dong Hung district, Red river delta Thai Binh province. It is made of sticky rice, sugar, sesame, gardenia, mandarin orange peel and lard. The cake is then put into a square pan so that it looks like a sesame bar when it is served. The sesame is thought to resemble the eggs of a crab that is commonly found in the North Of Vietnam, and so that the name comes from that crab.
It is very sweet and a bit chewy, and is a popular dish to eat around the Tet Holidays, it’s usually served with tea.

3. Green bean cake

“Green bean cake”, or Banh Dau Xanh Hai Duong is a sweet rectangular cake and it’s made of green bean, sugar, fat and grapefruit oil. It has a sweetly attractive smell when you open the box and a very tasty flavor when eating. This specialty cake has been selected as one of the top specialty gifts of Asia. It’s famous throughout Asia, not just in Vietnam.

Hai Duong province has the best green bean cake in Vietnam

4. Pia cake

Pia cake – banh pia with its sweet taste and pure scent of durian is a specialty in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang. The cake has an excellent combination of many ingredients including pliable layers of green peas, pork fat and the yolk of salted duck eggs, and of course durian. It’s a gelatinous cake with a filling that often consists of pork, or duck egg, or sometimes jelly. It’s wrapped in an outer paper, and is a favorite in South Vietnam, especially around the Mekong. Pia cake should be served with tea. That is the best way to enjoy pia cake.
