Discover Son Doong cave – the largest cave in the world

This brings us to discover The Son Doong cave, Quang Binh Province in tours of Vietnam. This was only recently discovered and is the biggest natural cave in the world. A river flowing through limestone has created this magnificent wonder over the course of 2.5 million years. As it made its way through the mountains, soft rock formations collapsed below it and the gigantic cave system was formed. Located near the border with Laos, it was discovered in 1991 by a local man. The noise of wind and water rushing through the cave frightened local people, causing them to stay away. It was not until 2009 that scientists from the British Cave Research Association conducted a survey and it became known to the general public.

Cave pearls which are formed by calcium salts secreting on a nucleus are polished to a fine gloss. They are normally less than half an inch in diameter. Here they have grown to the size of baseballs. Phong Nha Cave was previously the biggest in Vietnam and has been dwarfed by the five times larger, Son Dong Cave. The largest chamber in the cave is a staggering three and a half miles long, over six hundred feet high and almost 500 feet wide. That it has remain undiscovered for so long is a complete mystery.
