Bun Cha voted into World’s Ten Best Street Foods by National Geographic Readers

Foreign readers of National Geographic magazine have recently voted for their favourite street food in the world. Vietnam was represented, by having Bun Cha included on the list. Voting through the company’s Facebook page, Bun Cha was chosen as one of the favourites amongst their readers. The list of the top ten street foods is as follows:

1. Momo (Nepal)

These traditional Steamed dumplings are a real treat as anyone visit Nepal will attest. The doughy dumplings are traditionally stuffed with minced meat and more often than not vegetables and a local cheese known as Chhurpi. They are generally accompanied by a dipping sauce.

2. Baozi (Chegdu, China)

Once again it is dumplings that hit the heights here. Unlike the relatively bland dumplings found throughout China, in Chengdu they come very spicy. The locals see them as a great start on a cold day.

3. Doubles (Trinidad and Tobago)

This is a Caribbean take on the humble sandwich. Two pieces of fried flatbread are stuffed with curried chickpeas (channa) and topped with cucumber, mango chutney, coconut and a spicy sauce. The combination creates an explosion of flavours.

4. Chiang Rai Night Market (Thailand)

Thailand is known for its amazing street food, and here readers voted not for one particular dish, but for the stalls that make up the Night Market in Chiang Rai. Here customers enjoy every type of traditional Thai street food, and all of the highest order. Somtam (papaya salad) , Green Curry, Larb Moo (mince pork salad, Pad Thai (Thai noodles) and the ubiquitous deep fried insects are all available.

5. Dahi Vada (India)

India was consistently featured in the vote, as one would expect. The dish that came out on top was Dahi Vada, deep-fried fritters soaked in a rich yoghurt. It was recommended that the best place to enjoy this, was at the Chandni Chowk street market in Delhi.

6. Picarones (Peru)

These are warm donuts dripping with honey syrup, and are popular throughout the country. The ones sold at the Palzuela Chabuca in Lima are widely regarded as the very best.

7. Balut (Philippines)

Not for the faint hearted this is a duck embryo cooked inside its egg. The name means simply “wrapped” and whilst gruesome to look at, is highly valued by locals and often tried by tourists.

8. Bacalhau (Portugal)

A simple dish of codfish served with some bread and cheese, this is a big favourite in and around the streets of Porto in Portugal. Also suggested from this country was the Francesinha a sandwich filled with ham, sausage, other roasted meats and a beer sauce.

9. Bun Cha (Vietnam)

The Hanoi speciality of Bun Cha scored highly. Simple pork patties are grilled over a charcoal fire and served with noodles, fatty pork and herbs. It comes accompanied by a dipping sauce. The dish is found everywhere throughout the country now and is a firm favourite with Vietnamese people.

10. Nasi lemak (Malaysia)

A rice based breakfast dish it is rice and vegetables, cooked in coconut and pandan leaf, to present an aromatic and highly flavoured dish. It is served with traditional anchovies, chilli paste, cucumber and various side dishes. It is considered the national dish of Malasia now, and that’s saying something, as Malaysia is world renown for its street food.
