One of the things you need to know when traveling in Vietnam is what food you should try while on your trip there. Certainly there are a lot of choices to be decided upon as they have as many as up to 500 traditional dishes. So how would you know where to begin in your quest for the culinary adventure? If you are eating out one suggestion is always ask the cook or server, sometimes they can point you in the right direction. Or just go with t he type of food you think sounds interesting or in a category that you always lean towards, such as noodles. If you need more ideas while traveling in the country here are a few for you to try.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls

First one on the list: “Vietnamese Spring Rolls” or sometimes called Summer Rolls. This is familiar to almost everyone in the form of the “Egg Roll” but with a twist. They can be filled with the typical pork, shrimp, carrots that are shredded and bean noodles. You can see how they are similar to the egg roll and they too are also on the crunchy side. They also can be very reasonably priced. Just don’t go overboard on these as they can be oily and salty. And you need to save room for the next four items! This also could be a great appetizer to start your meal with.

Pho

Try the Pho or sometimes called Pho Bo. What kind of dish is this? It is a signature dish of Hanoi, also known too as Hanoi Beef and Rice Noodle Soup and if you like soup and noodles this would be the one to try. You can get this dish threat out the day but in Vietnam it is considered a breakfast meal. A great way to start your day with this hearty soup!

pho-bo

Elephant’s Ear Fish

Third on the list to try has an unusual name and it is called “Elephant’s Ear Fish”. No it isn’t an elephant’s ear that you are eating, BUT you will receive this dish with scales and teeth still attached to the fish. It will definitely look strange on the plate when it arrives but along with the exotic name it actually tastes rather good being that it is cooked lightly fried and crispy.

ca-tai-tuong

Banh Khoai

In the mood for some pancakes? Then you will want to try the “Banh Khoai”. Translated in English it means “happy pancake”. Another category in the tasty but affordable dish to try it is made with grated cassava, sugar, coconut milk, and pinch of salt. They also stuff it with pork and shrimp and then served with a side of peanut sauce for the topping. Almost sounds similar to a crepe with the stuffing inside it.

banh-khoai

Bo Nhung Dam

And last on the list is “Bo Nhung Dam” especially if you are looking for a meat dish to try. Another unusual dish but the beef in this case is dipped in vinegar to cook for just about 30 seconds. It won’t taste sour either and is another great dish to share.
